Black Crow

 Among the Blackfeet people, certain animals carry medicine. They are more than creatures of the earth; they are reminders of who we are, where we come from, and the responsibilities we carry. For my family, that animal is the crow.

Many people see a crow and think only of darkness. I was taught differently. The crow is intelligent, watchful, and aware of things others often miss. It moves between worlds, carrying stories, warnings, and lessons for those willing to listen.

In this painting, the crow watches over a quiet camp beneath the moonlight. The tipis glow softly in the darkness while the bird remains awake, standing guard above them. The scene is not meant to depict a specific place or moment, but rather a feeling—a connection to family, ancestors, and the enduring presence of the old ways.

The crow's medicine reminds us that we are never truly alone. The wisdom of those who came before us remains close, watching from the shadows, guiding us when we remember to look and listen.
