At Big Sky Bead Supply, our goal is to make high-quality beading materials accessible to all.

There are a lot of seed bead brands out there—especially from Japan and the Czech Republic—and they’re not all created equal. Differences in shape, size consistency, finish, and overall quality can really impact how your beadwork turns out.

*We do our best to make sure our beads have the brand name and factory color number listed*

Preciosa (Czech):

Preciosa beads have a more traditional, slightly rounded shape. They’re beautiful and affordable, but you’ll notice a bit more variation in size compared to Japanese beads. That can give your work a more organic, textured feel, which some people love—especially for classic or vintage-style designs.

Miyuki (Japan):

Miyuki is known for precision. Their beads are very uniform, with clean holes and consistent sizing, which makes them ideal for detailed patterns and weaving. Their Delica beads, in particular, are cylinder-shaped and stack perfectly, giving a sleek, polished look.

Toho (Japan):

Toho beads are also high quality and consistent, but they tend to have slightly larger holes than Miyuki. That makes them great for projects that require multiple thread passes or thicker threads. They’re a solid middle ground—reliable, versatile, and easy to work with.

Knowing what you’re getting:

Not all beads labeled “seed beads” are the same, and not all listings are clear about brand. Authentic beads from brands like Preciosa, Miyuki, and Toho usually come with manufacturer color numbers or codes. These numbers matter—they tell you the exact color, finish, and sometimes even the dye lot. If you’re working on a project that needs consistency, those codes help you reorder the same bead later without guessing.

If you don’t see a brand name or a manufacturer number listed, it’s usually a sign they’re generic or mixed batches. That doesn’t mean they’re bad, but you may see more variation in size, color, or finish, and it can be hard to match them again. Knowing the source helps you plan better and avoid surprises mid-project.
